  1. QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS FOR McAFEE ASSOCIATES PROGRAMS

  12.      These instructions tell how to identify a virus with the
  13. VIRUSCAN program and remove the virus with the CLEAN-UP program. 
  14. They are intended to provide the person with a virus infection an 
  15. emergency means to identify and remove an infection.  They are not
  16. meant to replace the program documentation.  Please read through
  17. the documentation for detailed instructions.

  19.      Files ending in a .DOC extension have been formatted for
  20. printing on a printer with a minumum of 60 lines per page.  Files
  21. ending in a .TXT extension have not been formatted.

  24. VIRUSCAN (SCAN)
  25.  
  26. 1.   Copy all the VIRUSCAN files to a floppy disk in drive A:.
  27.  
  28. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  29.  
  30. 3.   Insert the disk into the infected PC and type:
  31.  
  32. A:\SCAN C: D: E:
  33.  
  34.      This will allow VIRUSCAN to run on the C:, D:, and E: drives. 
  35. If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them out.
  36.  
  37. 4.   If infected files are found, they may be ERASED by running
  38. VIRUSCAN with the /D (overwrite and delete) option:
  39.  
  40. A:\SCAN C: D: E: /D
  41.  
  42.      Running VIRUSCAN with the /D option will delete files in a way
  43. that is non-recoverable.  Use this option only if you do NOT want
  44. to recover any of the infected files.  Otherwise use the CLEAN-UP
  45. universal virus disinfector.
  46.  
  47. 5.   Turn computer off to remove the virus from memory.

  50. CLEAN-UP (CLEAN)
  51.  
  52. 1.   Copy all the CLEAN-UP files to a floppy disk in drive A:.
  53.  
  54. 2.   WRITE PROTECT THE DISK!!!
  55.  
  56. 3.   Power down the infected system and then boot from a clean,
  57.      write protected system master diskette.  This must be done
  58.      to remove any viruses from memory that may interfere with the
  59.      virus removal process.   NOTE: If you are unable to access
  60.      your hard disk after booting from a floppy, check to make sure
  61.      that any special device drivers needed to use the hard disk
  62.      are on the floppy and run from the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT
  63.      file.

  65. 4.   Insert the CLEAN-UP disk into the A: drive of the infected PC
  66.      and type:
  67.  
  68. A:\CLEAN C: D: E: [virus-ID-code]
  69.  
  70.      This will allow CLEAN-UP to disinfect viruses on the C:, D:,
  71. and E: drives.  If you do not have D: and E: drives, leave them
  72. out.  
  73.  
  74.      For the Jerusalem virus, the ID code is [JERU].  For the
  75. Stoned virus, the ID code is [STONED].  For other viruses, use the
  76. ID code generated by SCAN, or check the VIRLIST.TXT file.  Remember
  77. to include the square brackets, "[" and "]."
  78.  
  79.      If you are disinfecting a file-infecting virus, such as the
  80. Jerusalem, it is recommended that you add the /A switch to the
  81. command line to check all files.  This will ensure that the virus
  82. is removed from any overlay files that may not use the defaault
  83. overlay extensions recognized by CLEAN-UP.  If you know that none
  84. of your programs use overlays, then the /A switch is not necessary.

  86.      If more than one virus type was detected, then CLEAN-UP will
  87. have to be run for each type of virus.

  89. 5.   Turn the computer off and then re-boot from the hard disk.

  92. AN IMPORTANT NOTE
  93. You have now completed a virus disinfection of your computer
  94. system, however, you may have other computers and floppy disks
  95. that are infected.  You know have a clean PC from which to
  96. scan and clean them.  Please now take the time to read through
  97. the VIRUSCAN and CLEAN-UP documentation to show you the fastest
  98. and safest way of removing your computer virus infection.
